Yes, CBD flower contains THC. Federal law allows hemp to carry no more than 0.3% THC by dry weight, and that is the ceiling for what gets sold as CBD flower in the U.S. The number that matters most is total THC, which counts the THCA in the bud as well as the delta-9 THC. This guide explains how that number is measured, what it means for effects and drug tests, and how to read a lab report before you buy.
CBD flower is hemp bud. Hemp is defined as Cannabis sativa L. and its derivatives with no more than 0.3% THC, and the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service describes anything above that as marijuana under the federal definition. So the legal ceiling for a jar of CBD flower is 0.3%, and plenty of cultivars test well below it.
In practical terms, 0.3% of a gram is 3 milligrams. A gram of marijuana flower, by comparison, is commonly sold at 15 to 30% THC, which is 150 to 300 milligrams per gram. That difference of roughly fifty to a hundred times is why CBD flower and marijuana behave so differently, even though the buds can look alike.

There is a catch, though. The 0.3% figure is not simply the delta-9 THC you see on a basic panel. It is a total, and the next section explains why.
Raw hemp flower contains very little delta-9 THC. Most of the THC-related compound in the plant is THCA, an acidic precursor. According to the CDC, THCA is not psychoactive before heating but converts into THC when the flower is smoked, vaped, or dabbed.
Because of that conversion, USDA’s laboratory guidelines require that hemp compliance testing measures total THC on a dry-weight basis and accounts for the THCA that can turn into THC. Labs typically apply a conversion factor to the THCA figure, then add the delta-9 THC. That is the math behind the “0.877” you may have seen on lab reports, and we walk through it in our 6-step CBD flower COA check.
Here is a simple worked example using that 0.877 factor:
| Lab result | Value |
|---|---|
| Delta-9 THC | 0.05% |
| THCA | 0.30% |
| THCA × 0.877 | 0.263% |
| Total THC (0.05 + 0.263) | 0.313% |
In this example the flower would land just above the 0.3% line, even though neither number alone looks alarming. This is why a jar that only prints delta-9 THC on the label tells you very little. If you want to see how the same logic applies to high-THCA products, our guides on THCA vs. delta-9 and on whether THCA turns into delta-9 when smoked go deeper.
The CDC states that CBD on its own does not cause a high, while THC is impairing and can produce mind-altering effects. With compliant CBD flower the THC level is low, so most people do not experience intoxication in the way they would with marijuana. Still, a few real-world factors change the picture:
Research on flower gives a useful reference point. A 2021 peer-reviewed study of cannabis flower gave 159 regular cannabis users chemovars with different ratios, including one with 1% THC and 23% CBD. Even that CBD-dominant flower contained 1% THC, which is above the hemp limit, so it was cannabis rather than hemp. The same study found that the flower combining THC and CBD produced similar positive effects with less paranoia and anxiety than THC-dominant flower, though the authors said more research is needed. The takeaway for hemp buyers is modest: CBD and THC interact, and the ratio on the COA is worth reading.
With compliant flower, the amount of THC per session is small, but it is not zero, and it is not fixed. Trace THC in each session, a higher-THCA batch, or heavier use all change your total intake over a week. We are not aware of a rule that tells you a safe daily THC amount from hemp flower, and that is why the sensible approach is to track the batch COA, keep your serving consistent, and talk to your doctor if you take medication or have a health condition. If you plan to drive or operate machinery, give yourself time and judge how you feel first.
It can. The U.S. Department of Transportation says that CBD use is not a legitimate medical explanation for a confirmed marijuana-positive result under its Part 40 rules. DOT also cautions that products marketed as CBD may contain more THC than their labels indicate and that FDA does not certify THC levels in CBD products. Kaiser Permanente adds that CBD itself should not appear on a drug test, but THC in a CBD product may.
If you are subject to workplace, DOT, or probation testing, the safest path is to ask your employer or testing program about their policy before using any hemp flower, since a trace of THC from smoked flower can add up. Tests screen for THC metabolites, not for whether the source was legal hemp.

A label is marketing. A certificate of analysis is a lab result for a specific batch. The New Jersey Cannabis Regulatory Commission’s guide explains that a COA reports product potency and tests for contaminants, and its cannabinoid section distinguishes THC and THCA from CBD and CBDA. Following that approach, here is a practical routine:
If the format still feels confusing, our walkthroughs on reading CBD lab test results and THCA flower lab certificates show real sections line by line. For the testing side of compliance, see what tests keep flower under the legal limit.
The CDC explains that the 2018 Farm Bill removed hemp from the federal Controlled Substances Act and defines it by no more than 0.3% delta-9 THC by dry weight, while some states keep different controlled-substance rules. That means CBD flower can be legal federally and still face limits in your state. Check your state’s rules before ordering.
Federal hemp status also does not make every product an approved medicine. The FDA says hemp-derived CBD products remain subject to FDA laws and that it is illegal to market CBD by adding it to food or labeling it as a dietary supplement. The Congressional Research Service reports that P.L. 119-37, enacted in November 2025, changes the federal hemp definition to less than 0.3% total THC and takes effect on November 12, 2026. It also describes exclusions, including certain products above 0.4 mg THC per container. For shoppers, the direction is clear: total THC, not just delta-9, is the measure that counts, which makes reading the COA even more important. Because rules like this keep evolving, check the CRS page and your state’s agency for the current text.
We grow up around hemp, and the first question buyers ask us is never about aroma. It is about THC. That is the right question.
Our approach is to make CBD flower the way the plant is meant to be enjoyed: natural and organic, with no additives, and with inventory that stays fresh and in stock. Customers tell us they value consistent freshness, reliable stock, fast shipping, and responsive support, and we take that as a reminder that trust is built jar by jar.
We also respect both indoor and outdoor growing. Indoor flower often shows tight, dense, frosty buds, while sun-grown flower can offer a fuller, earthier profile. Either way, trichomes are where the cannabinoids live, and the lab report is where you confirm what those trichomes hold. We encourage every customer to read the COA, and we wrote our COA check guide so that nobody has to guess.
Our range covers CBD flower, pre-rolls, tinctures, vapes, and concentrates, and we serve both everyday buyers and wholesale customers. Whatever you pick, we want you to know exactly what you are buying.

Yes. Hemp flower contains CBD along with small amounts of THC-related compounds such as THCA. The CDC states that CBD does not cause a high by itself, whereas THC is impairing, and that THCA is initially nonpsychoactive but can convert to THC when heated.
It can. The Department of Transportation says CBD use is not a valid medical explanation for a confirmed marijuana-positive result, and it warns that CBD products may contain more THC than labeled. If you are tested at work or by a program, ask about its policy first.
Yes, up to that amount. The legal limit is measured as total THC on a dry-weight basis, so THCA counts toward it. Open the COA for your batch and add delta-9 THC to THCA multiplied by 0.877.
No. Federal law treats hemp at or below the 0.3% threshold differently from marijuana, but the CDC notes that some states keep different controlled-substance rules. Check your state’s current law before you order.
